Investment just “tip of the iceberg”

While the U.S. DOT gloats over the lowest fatality rate ever recorded – 33,693 in 2009 – public works operations used the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s $28 billion allocation for highways to generate an additional $1.3 billion in safety enhancements.

Coincidence or the result of the Federal Highway Administration and national organizations’ emphasis on “Zero Deaths”? The goal of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, for instance, is to halve the number of traffic deaths over two decades, saving 1,000 lives each year.

Either way, FHWA Associate Administrator for Safety Joe Toole is pleased.

Video of Missouri’s largest deck pour
Two weeks ago the Missouri DOT kicked off the single widest bridge deck pour in state history. The 134-foot-wide pour was placed in 70-foot sections for a total of 1,750 cubic yards. Approximately 40 crew members worked to grade and finish the concrete, and at completion, there will be approximately 219,000 square yards of concrete paving in the 4.7-mile project. Infrastructure bank a 'must'
A report by the Urban Land Institute is urging Congress to establish a National Infrastructure Bank modeled on the 51-year-old European Investment Bank to jump start public-private partnerships. The report criticizes Congress for not taking the concept seriously. More

A bipartisan bill in the House of Representatives reverse U.S. Supreme Court decisions in 2001 and 2006 that left about 20% of the nation's 100 million acres of wetlands and lakes, streams, and wetlands unprotected. But not everyone’s happy about it. More

Insituform Technologies Inc. has renewed its term contract with Richmond, Va. Valued at up to $8.1 million, this is the third year of a five-year renewable contract and marks one of the company’s largest contracts to date from Richmond. More
